Arulmigu Adi Kumbeswarar Temple
Adi Kumbeswarar Temple is a historic Shiva temple located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Adi Kumbeswarar in the form of a lingam, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Mangalambigai Amman. The temple is praised in the Tevaram hymns of the Nayanmar saints and is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam.
According to legend, during the great cosmic dissolution, a sacred pot known as the kumbha, containing the seeds of creation and divine nectar, came to rest at Kumbakonam. Lord Shiva is believed to have broken the pot with an arrow, causing the nectar to flow into sacred water bodies including the Mahamaham Tank and Potramarai Tank. This legend is closely associated with the origin of the name Kumbakonam and the Mahamaham festival celebrated once every twelve years.
The present temple structure dates mainly to the Chola period, around the 9th century, with later additions made by the Vijayanagara and Thanjavur Nayak rulers. The large temple complex contains several gopurams, spacious corridors, pillared halls and numerous shrines. Its prominent eastern gateway tower rises to approximately 128 feet.
One of the temple’s most remarkable features is the Navaratri Mandapam, where representations of the 27 nakshatras and 12 zodiac signs are carved on a single stone. Other notable attractions include a distinctive six-armed Subramanya idol, stone nadaswarams, Kiratamurti sculptures, silver vahanas and shrines dedicated to several forms of Shiva, Ganesha, Murugan, Vishnu, the Navagrahas and the Nayanmar saints.
The temple conducts six daily worship rituals between approximately 5:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Numerous festivals are celebrated throughout the year, of which the Masi Magam festival, held during February or March, is the most important.
