Maruthamalai Murugan Temple

Maruthamalai Murugan Temple, also known as Marudhachalamurthy Temple, is located on top of the Maruthamalai hill, approximately 15 km away from Coimbatore. Because it is situated on Maruthamalai (Marutha hill), the deity is also called "Marudhan," and this sacred site has been praised by Arunagirinathar in his Thiruppugazh hymns. The primary deity of this temple, Lord Murugan, is known here as Subramanya Swamy, Thandayuthapani, and Marudhachalamurthy (Marudhan). At the foothills of Maruthamalai, there is also a small Ganesha temple called the Thanthondri Vinayagar Temple.Maruthamalai, considered the seventh padai veedu (holy abode) of Lord Murugan, was built and maintained by the Kongu Vettuva Gounder kings in ancient times. The Maruthamalai Murugan Temple is currently under the administration of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. According to inscriptions at the Thirumuruganpoondi Temple—a shrine revered in the Devaram hymns—there is information indicating that the Maruthamalai temple dates back to the 12th century CE.The cave temple of Pambatti Siddhar is located near the Murugan temple. Pambatti Siddhar, one of the historically significant eighteen Siddhars, lived in this cave for some time. The renovation (Thiruppani) of this Maruthamalai Murugan Temple was carried out by Sandow Chinnappa Devar in 1966.
